2 Hard-Won Depression Hacks I Wish I Could Tell My Younger Self
Start Small To Just Get Started
I often describe depression as like walking through molasses. You feel stuck, and it takes great effort just to get started.
You probably know that if you do anything other than lie in bed, you would feel better. However, you are waiting for motivation.
Here’s a secret: Motivation comes after you get started!
So, how do you get started when you don’t feel like doing anything, and everything feels overwhelming? You start small.
Maybe you know that going for a walk will lift your depression. You want to walk 30 minutes 5x a week. You can get there, but if you start by just walking around the block, you can get past your resistance and actually get started.
When you start walking around the block, you’ll likely get motivated to do more. The trick is to break your task down into the easiest first step. Get started, and the motivation will come.
Beware of Shoulds, Musts, and Have Tos
Have you ever had someone say you should, have to, or must do something? If so, you probably became resistant. As humans, we never like being told what to do.
We don’t respond well either when we tell ourselves, we must, have to, or should do something.
State it would be beneficial if I do (whatever needs to be done).
This will ease off the pressure, and you are more likely to take action.
